The mani choeten in Gomtu

300-year old mani choeten washed away

Landslides triggered by heavy rains washed away a 300-year-old Mani choeten in Goenpakha chiwog in Gomtu, Samtse on July 6 afternoon.

Officials from the gewog, police, and cultural officer from Samtse visited the sight and did not find any sacred relics.

Gomtu gup Robat Lepcha said the choeten was washed away completely. “We could not find anything,” he said.

However, the gup said there were some sculpted stones that are now brought to safer grounds. He also said that not many knew what the sacred choeten contained.

The area is still unsafe. When the day is suitable, a team would dig the debris for any sacred materials that may have been washed away.
