Football: A “7-A-side” Yuljong Winter Championship kicked off yesterday at the Chang Jiji football ground with 10 teams participating.

The tournament is organised by Paro Yuljong Futsal Club, to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. The organiser said that besides generating fund for the club the tournament is aimed to promote the game of football and to engage the youths gainfully during their vacation.

The tournament that was supposed to start form December 31 got postponed because only a handful of teams turned up.

A total of 10 local teams are taking part in the league cum knockout tournament. Most of the teams comprises of young school and college goers.

In the first day of the tournament, four matches were played. In the first game between Druk Nazhoen FC and JDWNRH, JDWNRD defeated Druk Nazhoen FC 2-1. In the second game, Kuenzung FC thrashed Street 7, 12-0. The third match also witnessed a similar score with Pep City thrashing DC Explorer 9-1. In the last game of the day, Youths in Blue defeated Northern Thimphu 4-3.

The winners of the tournament will be awarded a winning trophy with individual medals and a cash price of Nu 25,000. The runners up will be given a trophy with individual medals and cash price of Nu 17,000.

At the end of the tournament, a best player will be selected and awarded a trophy. The tournament is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
