LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Deki Wangmo, 21, a local model and the representative for Bhutan in the Manappuram Miss Asia 2015 pageant, spoke with MyBhutan, Kuensel’s partner,  about her likes and dislikes, her modeling career, the Miss Asia contest and her future career aspirations.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to become a fashion designer. I grew up in Thimphu and had a normal childhood with many dreams but never did I realize that I would become a model. I thank god for gifting me with all the criteria needed to be a model.

Are you seeing anyone special?

I am single. Now, am really focused on my passion to reach greater heights.

What is your favorite food?

I actually like fried food though unhealthy at times. However, I keep myself fit by going to the gym.

How would your friends describe you?

A flagpole! [laughs]

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

To bring peace and harmony in the society.

Favorite movie? Music?

Shawshank Redemption, no doubt. I like RNB and HipHop that keep me going while traveling and working out.

What do you do for fun?

Hangout out with my close buddies and catch up on old times.

When did you start modeling?

Modeling came to me as a surprise…it would be 2014…one of my friend who happens to be a staff of Project Bhutan recommended me for it and the rest is just history…[laughs]

Where was your first fashion show? Were you nervous?

It was for Namseling Boutique show… a corporate party kind. It was a huge success. Yes, I was nervous at the initial part of it.

Are you still nervous when you model?

I wouldn’t call it nervous…but I always have these butterflies in my stomach in every show I do and before I enter the ramp.

Which models inspire you?

I am a really big admirer of Tyra Bank. She has been my idol and an inspiration.

What sort of modeling do you prefer?

A little of both runway and catalogue because there is their own charm in both.

Does Bhutan have a large enough fashion industry for you to make modeling your career?

Bhutan is now reaching that stage where modeling can be a career for the passionate people. I would love to be in Bhutan and continue my career. If I get an opportunity to go abroad then I would definitely go…provided I can promote Bhutan and its culture too.

Are there any fashion designers that you would like to work with?

Fashion Designers are the backbone of a model, they make us look good. Therefore any designer with creativity in colors and styles would definitely book my walk!

How did you enter the Manappuram Miss Asia contest?

I was titled “Supermodel” by Project Bhutan and they selected me as the candidate who will represent Bhutan in Miss Asia Contest.

What have you been doing to prepare for the contest?

Its the usual things – keep practicing my walk, taking care of my skin, grooming myself to the extreme and of course reading and learning.

What prizes are offered at the contest? How would winning this sort of competition affect your life?

There is this beautiful crown and a cash prize of Rs 500,000. It would definitely change my life. More than the cash, the crown and the title would make my life at its best.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

In Bhutan, doing shows but if I can be promoted abroad then I will definitely go!
