Five people died on impact in Zimzoorong, Mongar, when the Santro car they were travelling in veered off the road and fell about 100 metres on December 6 morning.

The incident occurred when the family was returning to Thimphu after conducting the last rites of their grandfather in Kengkhar. The family included an 83-year-old woman, her 62-year-old son, his 54-year-old wife, their 26-year-old daughter and her husband, who works at the national referral hospital in Thimphu.

Dzongkhag kidu officer, Karma Chophel, said officials from the Gyaltshab’s office in Gyalpoizhing, dzongkhag officials, a rescue team from Kurichu hydroelectric plant, police and Kengkhar gewog officials retrieved the bodies and handed them over to the relatives.

Mongar police said they are investigating the cause of the accident. They said there was no trace of speeding.
