Five people were killed when a Versa taxi they were travelling in fell 650 metres below the road before reaching Wachey dzong on the Trongsa-Wangdue highway yesterday.

Local commuters who saw the wreck informed Bajo police around 1:30pm. According to police, the taxi was travelling from Trongsa – Wangdue with a lone passenger and that four other passengers joined them on the way.

The taxi veered off road three kilometers short of Khelakha before reaching Wachey dzong, which is around 15-20kms away from Bajo town.

Police said four died on impact, while one died after reaching Bajo regional hospital. One survived with minor injuries.

The passenger who died in Bajo hospital was the only female traveling in the taxi. She was a caretaker at Phobjikha BHU, while her husband who also died in the accident was a cook at Phobjikha Middle Secondary School.

The Trongsa-Wangdue highway’s condition has worsened due to continuous rainfall and road widening works. Investigations are still on to confirm the cause of accident.
