Ambassador Pema Choden on April 5 presented her Letter of Credence to His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, accrediting her as Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bhutan to the Kingdom of Spain at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

A foreign ministry press release states that His Majesty King Felipe VI welcomed the Ambassador to Spain and conveyed his warm wishes to His Majesty The King of Bhutan. He assured his support to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

During her stay in Madrid, the Ambassador called on the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Isabel Garcia Tejerina, and met with senior officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, which has its headquarters in Madrid.  During the meetings, both sides expressed interest in working closely together and areas for future cooperation were discussed.

Ambassador Choden also visited the King’s College School in Madrid and met Sir Roger Fry, founder of the school, who has been providing scholarships for Bhutanese to study at the school since 2011.

Formal diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Spain were established on February 11,  2011.
