The 2020 Bhutan Women’s National Football Championship has been suspended until further notice following the second nationwide lockdown.

Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) had to stop the league-cum-knockout tournament that began on December 16.  The tournament could play only eight matches.

Ten teams from eight dzongkhags—Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue, Mongar, Pemagatshel, Samdrupjongkhar, and Chukha,  took part in the tournament at Ugyen Academy’s ground in Punakha.

The teams from Trashigang and Samtse couldn’t participate in the championship this year.

The last game between Paro United Women’s FC and Phuentsholing United FC on December 21 ended 1-1.

BFF’s competition officer, Kinley Dorji, said that the players and officials are in the hotels.

Until last year, BFF used to conduct the competition at dzongkhag level and select the best team for the national championship, but considering the Covid-19 situation, the federation had directly selected the teams for this year’s tournament.

BFF will restart the tournament when the Covid-19 situation subsides.

“Top teams will be selected for the national championship,” said Kinley Dorji.
