The foreign ministry and the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development of Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 12 in Thimphu to establish a bilateral consultation mechanism between the two ministries.

Ambassador of Bhutan to Canada Doma Tshering, and Ambassador of Canada to Bhutan, Nadir Patel, signed the MoU in the presence of foreign minister Dr Tandi Dorji. 

A press release from the foreign ministry states that the MoU provides a platform for two foreign ministries to hold biennial meeting to review bilateral relations and to exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest. “During the consultations, the two sides will exchange views on developments in political, economic, trade and investment, consular, cultural and educational aspects and explore ways of further strengthening the relations between Bhutan and Canada.”

Bhutan and Canada established formal diplomatic relations in June 2003. To celebrate the 15 years of establishment of diplomatic relations, Ambassador Nadir Patel, visited Bhutan from December 10-13 with a nine-member delegation. The Ambassador hosted a reception on December 12 to mark the 15 years of establishment of diplomatic relations.
