A thousand butter lamps were lit at the Trashichhodzong on October 24 to celebrate the United Nations Day. Speaker Jigme Zangpo, ministers, senior civil servants and members of Parliament joined the UN community at the event.

Speaker Jigme Zangpo said UN’s achievements have contributed to a safer and more secure world and renewed Bhutan’s commitment to support the UN’s mandate.

“Gross National Happiness has long proven to us in Bhutan that the happiness and prosperity of current and successive generations lie in a more sustainable word, encompassing the pillars of development, economy and environment,” the Speaker said.

“We also know that our shared prosperity and continued tranquility rests in our ability and willingness to meet common challenges through deeper global cooperation and effective multilateralism.”
