Bhutan national junior tennis teams will face Sri Lanka today in the ongoing International Tennis Federation (ITF) Asia under (U)-12 competition in Bangladesh.
Yesterday, both boys and girls teams lost against India, and Bangladesh, 0-3, respectively. Bhutan lost in both singles and doubles categories.
However, Bhutan played better against Bangladesh in the girls’ doubles category. Bhutan could maintain 2-6 and 6-7 points in two sets.
Bhutan is represented by Bhutan Tennis Federation’s (BTF) head coach Kinley Wangchuk and four players including two girls.
Three participants including a girl are students of Phuentsholing Primary School. The other girl studies at Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School in Thimphu.
BTF’s General Secretary, Tshering Namgay, said the players trained since last year and the federation expects a good performance. “To train players in Phuentsholing, BTF sent the coach there to ensure that the training does not hamper their academics.”
Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka compete for the top two places to play in the upcoming 2023 ITF Asia U-12 competition to be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
In both categories, players have to compete in singles and doubles games against each country.
