Bhutan observed the 72nd anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations (UN) on October 24 with the lighting of 1,000 butter lamps at the Kuenray of Tashichhodzong.

Parliamentarians, senior government officials, former ambassadors of Bhutan to the UN, representatives and officials of the UN, and the members of diplomatic community based in Thimphu attended the function.

Home Minister Dawa Gyeltshen, chief guest, highlighted the contributions the UN made for Bhutan’s socioeconomic growth.

Gerald Daly, UN Resident Coordinator, expressed appreciation to the Bhutanese government for organising the “symbolic ceremony” and prayers for world peace. He said that efforts were being made under the leadership of Secretary General Antonio Guterres to engage in a comprehensive reform of the UN development system to support the member states implement the 2030 Agenda and achieving the sustainable development goals.

Reaffirming UN’s “unwavering support” to Bhutan, Gerald Daly said that the UN Team in Bhutan with GNHC is preparing the next UN support plans to ensure that strategic priorities are aligned with the 12th Plan.
