The senior national men’s cricket team will play host Malaysia today in the final of the first T20 Quadrangular Series 2022 in Malaysia.
Bhutan is playing the international final for the second time after winning the Asian Cricket Council’s T20 Men’s Eastern Regional tournament against Thailand in the final by three runs in 2018.
Winning four consecutive games, Bhutan booked the place for the final of the Quadrangular Series 2022.
Malaysia has been robust squad throughout the tournament. The team won all the six matches played in the league. The team defeated Bhutan by 39 runs and 155 runs on July 3 and 2, respectively.
On July 9, Bhutan defeated Thailand by 28 runs. Bhutan won the toss and elected to bat first against Thailand. The strategy worked for team Bhutan. Bhutan got 135/6 in 20 overs while Thailand could make only 107/7 in 20 overs.
Bhutan’s captain Jigme Singye said: “We are looking forward to a good competitive final against the host Malaysia.”
The place for the final would have been competitive between Bhutan and Maldives if the Maldives won both the remaining games against Malaysia and Thailand and Bhutan lost to Thailand.
In that case, a team for final would have been decided based on the “net run rate” calculation. The Maldives defeated Thailand by 41 runs on July 8. However, the Maldives suffered a crushing defeat from Malaysia by 94 runs on July 9.
Bhutan Cricket’s Chief Executive Officer Damber S Gurung said: “This is the second T20 final led by captain Jigme Singye and he knows exactly how precious it is to become champion. “
He said the team had worked hard for this moment. “I wish them the best of luck for the finals.”
The game will commence at 9am (BST). Viewers can watch live on Malaysian Cricket Association’s Facebook page.
