Accident: A Bhutanese vehicle, a Santro, was set ablaze by the residents of Dhaligoan on the Assam highway after the car hit a school boy on December 5.

The Sampdrupjongkhar bound vehicle was plying from Phuentsholing. Two Bhutanese men, employees of Chukha Hydro Power Cooperation were on an official tour when the incident occurred.

Source said the boy was on his way to school when the car hit him. He was immediately evacuated to a hospital and the two men were detained at the Daligoan police station.

Gelephu police said based on the cordial relationship with their counterparts across the border, the two Bhutanese were released on December 6 and have reached Gelephu.

The student is in stable condition, according to sources.

“Since lots of accidents are happening on the Bhutan-India highway due to speeding, commuters plying the highway should be extra careful,” police said.

Police also said that the locals in Assam are frustrated with Bhutanese vehicles speeding along the highway, which often leads to accidents. The Santro was burnt beyond repair.
