Police are tracing those suspected by Thai police to have been involved in the man’s death

Crime: The foreign ministry has sought a detailed report from the embassy in Bangkok on the discovery of the body of a Bhutanese man in Bangkok on April 3.

Thai police recovered a body of a Bhutanese man from a canal in Bangkok’s Klong Ong Ang district on April 3, Thai media reports said.

The man in his mid-forties is suspected to have died from a drug overdose.

Thai newspaper, The Nation quoted the Institute of Forensic Medicine that the man had ingested 58 balls of crystal methamphetamine and one of the bags had burst inside him.

The man allegedly travelled with six others: five Bhutanese and an Indian national. Of the five Bhutanese, two were women.

All the five Bhutanese are reported to have returned to Bhutan on April 2, Thai media reported.

The group arrived in Bangkok on March 28 and checked into the Burapa hotel on Mahachai Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district.

Two men were captured on the hotel’s CCTV moving one large and two small bags out of the building at 1am on April 1.

A camera near the canal showed them dumping the large bag into the canal and leaving the area in a taxi.

Foreign minister Damcho Dorji said the embassy in Bangkok has been asked to submit a report.

“We only know what is out in the foreign media,” Lyonpo Damcho Dorji said.

The home ministry confirmed the report that Bhutanese were involved but details were not shared as the ministry needed to “confirm everything”.

Kuensel sources said the government is trying to fly home the body of the deceased.

Police Chief Brigadier Kipchu Namgyel said that the relatives of the deceased have been traced.

“An investigation is underway to trace the others who are involved,” Brigadier Kipchu Namgyel said.

The Thai criminal court issued arrest warrants for the suspected Bhutanese nationals and an Indian national on charges of murder, hiding a corpse and possession of narcotics, Thai media reported yesterday.
