The Bhutan National Bank (BNB) observed World Savings Day yesterday with a special event for 50 children, who were the lucky winners of Nu 1,000 fixed deposit for one year.
The BNB launched this initiative this year to highlight the importance of saving and financial literacy among the younger generation.
To qualify for the giveaway, children had to open a Piggy Bank account with BNB, with at least one parent or guardian registered on the bank’s mobile banking app, Mpay.
The 50 winners were drawn randomly during a live Facebook event, with results revealed on the same day. The winners were invited to the celebration at the bank. Special goodie bags and refreshments were offered to the children.
Prior to the event, BNB officials visited numerous schools to assist children in opening Piggy Bank accounts for them to be eligible for the lucky draw.
Currently, BNB has 12,319 Piggy Bank account holders, and more are expected to join as families realise the importance of saving. The interest rate for Piggy Bank Account is set at 4.5 percent.
