Training: A week-long Effective Business Management Training for small business managers, conducted by BOiC in Mongar, inspired the participants to develop their strategies and management skills.

“Many small business owners lack management skills and we’re trying to teach them the basics and essential aspects of doing business like marketing, book keeping and building customer relationship, among others. This is one small step towards achieving the national goal of self-reliance,” said Tandin Wangchuk of BOiC’s Business Development, Research & Training Division.

To date, BOiC has conducted two such training to study the viability of similar training in the future as a number of projects applicants continue to increase.

Out of 170 approved projects, 111 falls under cottage and small industries. Of the approved fund of Nu 310.2 million (M), Nu 141.4M has so far been disbursed. About 90 percent of the applications are in the agriculture and livestock sector.

Mongar has the highest number of applicants – 673 – followed by 584 from Paro. Gasa has the least at just 9.

Sonam Dorji, 19, from Mongar, received fund from BOiC to start organic farming. He said that as all the participants are in the stage of starting businesses, the training is helping them gain a clearer perspective on starting successful.

“I am now confident of achieving production target,” said Sonam Dorji.

Karma Yangdon from Punakha wants to start mushroom cultivation. “Now I know about human resource management, book keeping and client care. I feel confident.”
