Sonam Tenzin has not given up his hope to serve the people. The 33-year-old’s first attempt in 2013 where he contested as a Druk Chirwang Tshogpa candidate was not successful.

The Thimphu based businessman now aspires to represent the people as a National Council (NC) member and has registered with the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB).

Sonam Tenzin from Khamdang has a Bachelors degree in computer applications from Madras University in India.  He was doing business even before he joined Druk Chirwang Tshogpa.

“I realised that if I serve in NC, I would have an opportunity to serve people of the whole dzongkhag and in a broader perspective,” he said. “But if I serve as a party candidate then I would be able to serve and contribute to my constituency only.”

He said that if he manages to win as the NC member, he would serve the community. “I have experience in interacting with the people.”

He also said that by contesting for the post, he wants to tell the younger generation that it is important for young people to take part in politics for a vibrant democracy. “I hope my participation would inspire younger people.”

Sonam Tenzin plans to meet people and conduct familiarisation when he returns to Trashiyangtse where he claims to be already familiar from his 2013 experience.

He said encouragement from people and family convinced him to contest for NC. Although people suggested him to join political parties, he said he chose to contest for the NC. “Being a part of the house of review would give me an opportunity to ensure that good laws exist and benefit the people.”
