In an attempt to ensure security in Trongsa town the dzongkhag administration has installed 25 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at various locations including the vegetable market.

In the past few years, the town experienced numerous cases of vehicle vandalism, fighting, vehicle hit and run instances. In the absence of CCTV facility, officials said it had been challenging to find the culprits and take prompt action.

Dzongkhag administration spent around Nu 2 million on the project, and it also plans to install cameras in Sherubling area after the town extension is complete.

Trongsa information and technology officer Samuel Pradhan, who is supervising the work, said that the proper town area has 19 cameras and another six are at the vegetable market.

“The cameras will be handed to the police and will monitor 24 hours,” he said.

There are two types of cameras: the ordinary bullet camera, and the starlight camera, which can record footage even if vehicle headlight falls directly on the camera at night.

Trongsa municipal officials said the initiative would also help monitor illegal waste dumping and bring about better waste management.

Vendors said the cameras at the vegetable market could prevent theft of their goods stored at the stalls at night.

“As of now we have to close our shops at 7pm, and we have to hurry for packing. Now, we can keep them safely at the stalls,” a vegetable vendor said.
