Agriculture: Chanachen village in Geling gewog got its first electric fencing system (EFS) yesterday. The five-kilometre fencing that was launched yesterday will benefit and protect the fields of  24 households in the village.

The system, meanwhile, has covered 162 acres of agriculture area. About Nu 345,000 has been spent from the Gewog Development Grant (GDG) to complete this EFS.

Meanwhile, this electric fencing is also the first system placed in Geling gewog.

Geling Gup Phub Dorji said that the plan to install the fence existed since 2014. “There was huge problem people faced without the fencing,” the gup said, adding the situation will finally change for the better.

Gup Phub Dorji said that villagers were not able to harvest what they cultivated in their fields due to wild animals encroaching the fields. Wild animals such as deer, monkey, and bear destroy the crops.

Maize, wheat, potato, and several other vegetables are grown in the gewog.

Gup Phub Dorji also said that there were other villages in the gewog that needs electric fencing.

However, Chanachen was identified for the EFS because it does not have road access yet. Chanachen is a three-hour walk from the Chukha dam site. “It was important to install electric fencing in this village,” Gup Phub Dorji said. “Villagers were getting demotivated already and leaving the village.”

However, Geling gewog administration also has plans to install electric fencing in other affected villages.
