Team Chung won against Singye by two wickets in the ongoing 2023 men’s national cricket championship at Gelephu international cricket ground yesterday.

Chung remained unbeaten with five points as of yesterday from two appearances.

In the game of 50 overs, Chung won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Singye made 87 runs with the fall of all wickets in 30.5 overs in the first inning. Chung played decisively and acquired 88 runs in 24.4 overs with short of eight wickets.

When Singye made 87 runs in 24.4 overs, Chung needed 88 runs from 300 balls.

It was an uphill task for Chung. However, the team was able to maintain its winning streak.

The skipper of Chung, Gakul Ghalley, played a crucial role in the team. He contributed 33 runs from 48 balls.

Gakul Ghalley, 22, was declared the player of the match.

Gakul Ghalley said: “I expected to snatch the game easily, but it was difficult. We got lots of pressure when we lost our wickets in the middle of the inning. I am glad won in the end.”

He said the team expects to win against Taag tomorrow.

Four teams are competing in the maiden tournament organised by Bhutan Cricket.

Bhutan Cricket’s chief executive officer, Damber S Gurung, said the current tournament is unique. “Players were selected from across the country based on the club performance, and are divided into four teams.”

The senior national team players will be selected from this tournament. “Next month, there is an international tournament. A similar tournament will be organised from January 17 for the women,” Damber S Gurung said.

As of yesterday, all teams played two games each. Singye and Taag have three points each. Druk is yet to earn a point.

The tournament began on January 6.  The final match will be played on January 14.
