Customs and security officials seized foreign currency worth USD 2,27,000 at Paro international Airport from two women who were travelling to Bangkok during normal security checking on February 7.
Customs official said that the two women, aged 25 and 35 from Tangmachu in Lhuentse were travelling to Bangkok for shopping and claimed to own a shop in Thimphu.
A Custom official said that they are conducting an investigation and the seized currency is in the airport customs office. “The seized notes would be forwarded to Royal Monetary Authority by the custom head office after the investigation is completed.”
Rules state that a passenger is not allowed to carry more than USD 10,000 without seeking clearance.
