With the introduction of candidate for Doga-Shaba yesterday, Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) has declared all 47 candidates for the 2018 National Assembly elections.

Namgay Tshering worked with the health ministry for 14 years before resigning to join politics. He worked as the national programme manager with the National HIV/AIDS and STIs control programme and head of the communicable disease division with the health ministry’s public health department.

The 39-year-old from Jelekha, Paro has Master’s Degree in Public Health from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and BSc. Communication from the University of Madras, Tamil Nadu in India.

The party declared 46 candidates together on June 1. The Doga-Shaba candidate was not declared because Namgay Tshering had yet to complete his resignation procedures.

Namgay Tshering said: “I wasn’t selected from the best of the best; I was picked from among those that come from humble backgrounds,” he said. “With my joining, the party is ready to go into the field and offer choice to the people.”

Namgay Tshering said he joined DNT because of the party manifesto. “I am very much attracted to the manifesto because the manifesto is an actionable point that reaches to the benefit and welfare of the general population of the country.”

He said narrowing the gaps, Nyamrup’s priority, means many things. “If we carry out the developmental activities in line with the party’s manifesto, I feel that we can contribute towards the fulfilment of the country’s developmental philosophy of Gross National Happiness.”

He added: “In order to achieve the manifestos, we need to work really hard in the formulation of policies, plans and strategies through bottom-up approach.”

Namgay Tshering said Doga-Shaba is one of the remotest constituencies in the country. “Having worked with the social sector and based on my experience, I feel that I can contribute and enhance the livelihood of my constituency and the country at large.”

Responding to a question on the party’s manifestos, Dr Tandi Dorji said the party is preparing its manifestos. “Moreover, at the moment, we are not allowed to talk about the manifesto.”

He said the party’s manifesto will be prepared in line with the party’s priority, to narrow the gaps.
