The Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) on May 23 declared Pempa, 36, as its candidate from Chhukha’s Bongo-Chapcha constituency for the 2018 National Assembly election.

He has a bachelor’s degree (general) from North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya, India.

Pempa served 10 years in the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) as general English clerk, accountant and head of the English clerk section.

The candidate resigned from the RBA in 2007 and became a farmer. Pempa said he was inspired by the DPT’s ideology of equity and justice. “DPT has performed well as the first democratically elected government and as the opposition since 2013,” he said.

“Although I lost in the recent National Council election, my supporters encouraged me to contest in the National Assembly election,” he said.

The party’s press release states that besides his valuable experiences as a public servant and farmer, he brings along a fiery passion for politics and democracy and unwavering commitment to serve the King, country and people.
