Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) won both the constituencies in Samdrupjongkhar.

Like in the primary round, the people of Samdrupjongkhar chose DPT candidates over Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa’s (DNT).

DPT’s Dewathang-Gomdar candidate, Ugyen Dorji, won by a narrow margin in the general elections 2018; DPT’s Jomotshangkha-Martshala candidate, Norbu Wangzom, defeated DNT candidate by over 800 votes.

For the two candidates of Dewathang-Gomdar constituency, the competition was tough. With only 23 votes difference in the provisional postal ballot results, DPT’s Ugyen Dorji was in lead over DNT’s Thinley Namgay. Ugyen Dorji secured 2,198 postal votes. Over 4,370 people cast their votes through postal ballots.

Dewathang-Gomdar constituency had 5,060 registered postal ballot voters. Although the constituency received 4,400 postal ballots, 27 were rejected for various reasons.

In Jomotshangkha-Martshala constituency, close to 8,000 people cast their votes, of which 3,763 were postal voters.

With 2,196 votes Jomotshangkha-Martshala’s DPT candidate Norbu Wangzom secured about 53 percent of the electronic voting machine (EVM) votes.

The vote difference of about 200 was further widened when Norbu Wangzom secured about 58 percent of the votes cast through postal ballot votes.

Jomotshangkha-Martshala had 4,348 postal voters.

Samdrupjongkhar had 25,826 registered voters, of which 14,587 are under Dewathang-Gomdar constituency. Over 18,400 people of Samdrupjongkhar cast their votes through EVM and postal ballots.

The voter turnout at Samdrupjongkhar was 71 percent.
