The Department of Revenue and Customs (DRC) observed the International Customs Day 2025 with a ceremony at the Regional Revenue and Customs Office in Samtse yesterday, highlighting its progress in modernising customs operations in the country.
The event, organised by the DRC, aligned with the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) 2025 theme, “Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security, and Prosperity.”
International Customs Day commemorates the establishment of the WCO, formerly the Customs Co-operation Council, on January 26, 1953.
Bhutan has been observing the day since 2014, ensuring its dedication to improving customs administration and aligning with international standards.
“Bhutan has adopted measures aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, improving transparency, and protecting economic and environmental interests,” the DRC stated.
The DRC added that its achievements in this journey have been a result of collaboration among customs officials, private sector stakeholders, and strategic leadership.
One major activity during the celebration was the recognition of contributors to Bhutan’s customs administration.
The DRC awarded the top ten taxpayers and the most compliant taxpayers in the income tax category for their role in revenue generation.
In addition, WCO merit certificates were presented to customs officials for their dedicated service, while the employee of the year awards acknowledged staff members who demonstrated exceptional performance.
Another important event was the launch of the Indirect Tax Manual 2025, which aims to streamline indirect tax administration and align Bhutan’s tax practices with global standards.
The manual is expected to improve compliance and efficiency in tax processes, according to the DRC.
DRC used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to the WCO’s priorities of efficiency, security, and prosperity. The department outlined plans to modernise systems and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders to achieve these goals.
DRC stressed on fostering compliance, building trust among taxpayers, and leveraging technology to align with Bhutan’s sustainable development goals.
On the day, it called on businesses and the public to actively partner in creating an efficient customs ecosystem that supports economic growth and social well-being.
The department also highlighted its focus on balancing trade facilitation with border security, contributing to both national and regional objectives.
The event was graced by Finance Minister Lekey Dorji as the chief guest, accompanied by senior officials from the ministry.
