Former Dorji Lopen murdered at his residence

The former Dorji Lopen, Yonten Gyeltshen, was stabbed to death at his residence in Nalanda, Punakha, in the early hours of July 2.

The former Dorji Lopen, Yonten Gyeltshen, was stabbed to death at his residence in Nalanda, Punakha, in the early hours of July 2.

The suspect, a former monk, was apprehended by Paro police.

Kuensel learned that the accused went to Nalanda with the intention to commit burglary.

The body of the victim was discovered the following day. The former Dorji Lopen was said to be living alone without any attendant.

Kuensel also learned that the suspect, who is currently in police custody, is a known habitual offender with a history of criminal records and drug addiction.

The former Dorji Lopen was born on August 30, 1935, at Bulgang above Nobgang, Punakha to father Thinley and mother Sangay Chenzom.

In 1999, in celebration of the silver jubilee of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s coronation, he was appointed as the Dorji Lopen.
