In Punakha on March 6, Dzomi gewog’s Lhaki Dolma was nominated as the candidate for the upcoming National Council (NC) election from the gewog. She got 279 ‘yes’ votes and 35 no ‘votes’.

Of the ten aspirants competing for the NC seat in the dzongkhag, two are women.

Dzomi Gewog has close to 2,000 registered voters. However, only 314 voters cast their vote.

Meanwhile, Toepaisa gewog nominated Dechen Thaiye Dorji as the gewog’s NC representative. He got 217 ‘yes’ votes and 28 ‘no’ votes.

Toepaisa has 1,949 registered voters, of which 245 cast their votes yesterday.

Namgyel, 73, said, “I think it is really important to have the right to vote.”

The gewog issued 88 voter’s card on the spot for those without one.

Tenzin Wangchuk, 29, from Phendeykha, said, “People coming forward to vote is encouraging. Casting vote is very important.”

Punakha has 10 NC aspirants.
