His Majesty The King awarded the institutional Druk Thuksey Institutional Award to the Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) yesterday in Samtse.
Chief Election Commissioner Chogyel Dago Rigdzin, and election commissioners Deki Pema, and Ugyen Chewang received the award on behalf of the commission.
The citation for the award reads thus: “Since its establishment in 2005, the Election Commission of Bhutan has conducted eight rounds of elections, including those for National Council, National Assembly Primary and General Elections, and Local Government elections.”
The Druk Thuksey is awarded to the ECB in recognition of its services to the nation and people, through their efforts to inform and educate the people, and in carrying out successful elections, which have helped strengthen democracy in Bhutan.
Chief Election Commissioner Chogyal Dago Rigdzin said, “It’s a great honour for all of us serving and having served in the ECB to be recognised with Druk Thuksey Institutional Award, on the most joyous occasion of the 111th National Day.”
Chogyal Dago Rigdzin said ECB takes this opportunity to offer tribute and gratitude to His Majesty for the guiding wisdom, kindness and magnanimity.
“We pledge and re-dedicate ourselves to serve His Majesty The King’s noble vision of a vibrant democracy that ensures unity, harmony and prosperity of our nation,” he said.
His Majesty The King also awarded National Order of Merit silver to Bhutan Broadcasting Service Corporation (BBSC) producers Karma Dorji, Tshewang, Chhimi Dorji, and Sonam Tobgyel.
The award was in recognition of their service to the nation, by producing all the National Council and National Assembly primary round and general round electoral debates, which helped the people of Bhutan, make an informed decision during the election period.
While conferring the award to the recipients, His Majesty also recognised the contribution of Bhutan Broadcasting Service and expressed appreciation to all the employees.
The recipients said it was a privilege and honour to represent the organisation and receive the award.
They said that the award was in recognition of the collective effort of the colleagues in the organization.
Sonam Tobgyel said the award was also to further stress the importance of the role of the media and public servants as emphasised by His Majesty The King in His address to the nation.
Senior producer Tshewang said it was a pleasant surprise. “It’s an honour and we’ll have to continue to work hard to uphold the prestige of the award,” he said.
They said that such recognition would serve as a morale boost to those working in the media.
