A former thromde tshogpa, Thinley Namgay was elected as the new Samdrupjongkhar thrompon after he secured most of the postal ballots and electronic voting machine (EVM) votes yesterday. 

The results show a landslide victory for him with 215 EVM votes and 204 postal ballots, while the other contestant Ugyen Wangchuk got 93 EVM votes and 91 postal ballots.

Thrompon-elect Thinley Namgay said he was confident of winning the election since he had experience in serving as thromde tshogpa for two years. “People have voted for me because they liked my pledges as they are all achievable.”

“I am overwhelmed that people have trusted and voted for me. I will work hard to achieve all the pledges I have made during the campaign and uphold the people’s trust,” Thinley Namgay said. 




In Samdrupgatshel demkhong, Thinley Namgay secured 63 votes and 12 voted for Ugyen Wangchuk. Of the 236 registered voters in the demkhong, 74 turned up to cast their votes yesterday.

The 39-year-old Thinley Namgay got 50 EVM votes in Bangtsho demkhong while his opponent secured 17 EVM votes. Sixty-seven voters cast their votes out of 164 registered voters in the demkhong. 

Of the 286 eligible voters registered in Kipse demkhong, 48 voted for Thinley Namgay and 28 for Ugyen Wangchuk through the EVM.   In Samdrupjongkhar Maed demkhong, Thinley Namgay secured 17 EVM votes while Ugyen Wangchuk bagged 15 EVM votes. The demkhong has 83 eligible registered voters, and 32 turned up to cast their votes.

Thinley Namgay had 20 EVM votes from Samdrupjongkhar Toed demkhong, and Ugyen Wangchuk secured 11 votes. Thirty-one turned up to cast their votes out of 73 registered voters in the demkhong.




Of the 48 eligible voters registered in the Samdrupjongkhar Bar demkhong, 18 voted for Thinley Namgay and 10 for Ugyen Wangchuk.
