Like most farmers, Gopi Krishna Khatiwara and his family live off the land they have in Pelrithang Khamead village in Gelephu. The family grew enough for their consumption before half their land was lost.

About five years ago, the Maokhola river washed away 1.11 acres of the family land. In 2017, another flash flood eroded about an acre of Khatiwara’s land leaving the family with some 1.6 acres of land today.
