A former teacher, Karma Gyeltshen, is the new National Council (NC) elect from Trashiyangtse, provisional results declared yesterday show.

Karma Gyeltshen, 35, resigned from teaching in 2016 to contest as a Thrompon. 

This year, he contested from Yangtse Throm.

He secured a total of 1,952 votes with 577 postal votes and 1,375 from EVM to become dzongkhag’s council candidate. Karma Gyeltshen was unreachable for comments.

Thinley who contested from Yangtse gewog secured 1,833 votes, the second highest. He won 1,367 EVM votes and from the EVM and 466 from the postal ballot.

With a vote difference of 119 between he and the elect, he said that he would have to once cross check the results.

Incumbent council member Tashi Phuntsho secured the least number of votes, 625, among the six candidates. He got 403 postal ballot votes and 222 votes from the EVM.

Tongmajangsa gewog’s candidate Ngawang Tashi secured 767 votes from postal ballots and 757 from EVM.

Phurpa Gyeltshen secured the highest postal ballot vote, 828, but won 971 from the EVM.

Khamdang gewog’s candidate Sonam Tenzin won 719 votes from the EVM but only got 502 postal ballot votes.
