Former gynaecologist and specialist at the national referral hospital Dr Phurb Dorji, 56, was nominated from Khatoed gewog in Gasa during the dhamngoi zomdu held at Gasa Primary School yesterday.

Dr Phurb Dorji secured 127 votes while the incumbent NC member Sangay Khandu secured 66 votes. The third candidate, Tenzin Namgay, secured 44 votes.

More than 70 percent of the 318 registered eligible voters turned up to cast their votes.

Voters started coming to the polling station around 8:30am and by the time the nomination started officially, more than 50 voters had gathered at the school. The voting time was open until 3pm.

Of the four gewogs in Gasa, Laya has the highest registered voters of more than 600 voters, followed by Lunana with about 499 voters and Khamed has around 497 voters.

A voter, Dorji, 60, said that a candidate should benefit the nation and should be able to take his or her responsibility. “Not undermining the number of aspirants, a candidate should be experienced and capable.”

Meanwhile, three voters who turned up to vote with their old voter photo identity card (VPIC) were issued new voter cards.

Khamed gewog’s dhamngoi zomdu will be conducted today at Bjishong Central School. Nomination meeting for Gasa dzongkhag ends on March 12.
