Gedu College of Business Studies (GCBS) defeated Sherubtse College 51-39 in the men’s basketball final yesterday in the ongoing Bhutan University Sports Federation (BUSF) tournament at Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) in Samdrupjongkhar.   It is the fourth consecutive win for GCBS.

GCBS coach Tshewang Drukdra said he was glad that his boys maintained the same spirit. “We have been training since the start of the semester. I was confident that my boys would lift the trophy.”

“Generally, I would say that all my players could easily play in the Bhutan Basketball Federation’s B-League. Four of the players are capable to feature in A-League.”

On the same day, the College of Natural Resources (CNR) won against Paro College of Education (PCE) 29-22 in the women’s basketball final.

PCE won in both men’s and women’s volleyball finals yesterday.

In the best of five games, the men’s team won against the host JNEC after a highly contested match.

In the first set, JNEC won 25-16, but the PCE equalised 25-19 in the following set. The host again grabbed the third set 25-16, but PCE levelled in the next set 25-22. In the deciding set, PCE won 15-10.

In the women’s category, PCE defeated the College of Language and Culture Studies (CLCS). Paro women won the first and second sets 25-14, 25-13, but CLCS won the third set 25-15. PCE won the last set 25-23.

Starting this year, a traditional archery tournament was also instituted.  CNR won the archery tournament defeating PCE, 20-16 in 15 rounds on December 14.

The 2022 BUSF tournament ends today.

In the football final today, Norbuling Rigtar College will face GCBS in the women’s category, while PCE will play against the College of Science and Technology in the men’s category.

According to officials, some challenges in the BUSF tournament are the lack of a standard venue, insufficient budget, and no standard food and lodge, among others.

The seventh BUSF tournament has 316 students and 49 officials participating from nine colleges under the Royal University of Bhutan since December 13.

BUSF secretariat is located at PCE.  The 2020 and 2021 BUSF tournaments were cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament started in 2014 to promote wholesome education, and to ensure student engagement.
