Her Majesty the Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck donated 25 high-end hospital beds to the health ministry yesterday.

During the handing-taking ceremony at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital in Thimphu, health secretary Dr Ugen Dophu said Her Majesty has always been the guiding light of the health ministry and worked tirelessly for the health and well-being of all Bhutanese.

Thanking Her Majesty on behalf of the ministry and the people, Dr Ugen Dophu said the equipment will contribute significantly to the improvement of hospital services and patient welfare across the country.

“Her Majesty has played a crucial and significant role in advancing the health and wellbeing of all Bhutanese,” he said.

High-end beds are designed for the well-being and comfort of patients.

Department of Medical Services’ director general, Dr Pandup Tshering, said the ministry is working on the distribution of the beds to health facilities across the country.

“These special beds will bring comfort to those seriously sick patients admitted to hospitals and will contribute towards improving the quality of the stay in the hospital,” he said.

Apart from giving comfort to patients during their stay in the hospital, Dr Pandup Tshering said the gift from Her Majesty will also help save a significant amount of budget which can be utilised for procuring other essential items for the health facilities.

The health ministry will distribute the beds to health facilities after careful assessment of needs, Dr Pandup Tshering said. “Under the guidance and support of Her Majesty, the health ministry will continue to work towards improving health services for the benefit of people of Bhutan.”

Her Majesty, who is the UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador, has visited all 20 dzongkhags to advocate and sensitise people on priority public health and social issues.
