A 30-year-old technician at the operating theatre (OT) in the national referral hospital in Thimphu, was allegedly accused of raping a patient attendant.

According to sources, the incident was reported to have happened around 11pm on April 5.

The woman in her 30s  and a mother of two, had a patient admitted to the surgical ward at the hospital who was taken to the OT the same night.

A staff from the OT called the patient attendant to the OT for a blood test since the patient required a blood transfusion. It was alleged that the accused injected an anaesthetic drug through a cannula instead of drawing blood for the test.

According to sources, the woman said she found herself in the emergency room  when she became conscious. She complained about discomfort in her private part.

Sources said that when the woman did not return to the surgical  ward, the staff at the ward called the OT room to enquire.

The other staff at the OT room said they did not call the attendant when the accused said he would respond to the call. It is not known what the accused said to the ward staff. He left home early after duty yeaterday morning.

The hospital’s forensic department is yet to confirm the case.

The suspect was arrested the next day. Police are investigating the case.
