The Indian community in Thimphu celebrated India’s 72nd Independence Day at the Indian Embassy in Hejo yesterday.

His Majesty’s representative from the Gyalpoi Zimpon office, Zimpon Ugyen K Namgyel, cabinet secretary, chief of protocol, foreign secretary and senior government officials attended the celebration.

Hundreds of Indian community members also attended the hoisting of India’s flag.

The Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Jaideep Sarkar read excerpts from the address to the nation by President Shri Ram Nath Kovind, on the eve of the India’s 72nd Independence Day.

The address highlighted how various activities in India contribute to further maintain the principles of the freedom struggle, and urged to uphold the principles in one’s own ethical way.

The president in his address also spoke of how health, cleanliness, hygiene, and education were part of Gandhi’s struggle for freedom. “This independence day, so close to the 150th anniversary commemoration of Gandhiji, let us adapt his ideas and maxims in whatever manner we can in our everyday work and conduct.”
