Jigme Namgyel Engineering College (JNEC) in Dewathang, Samdrupjongkhar, has upgraded its diploma of mechanical engineering course to a Bachelors of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (BEME). The college will offer the four-year course next year.

President of JNEC, Andu Drukpa (PhD) said that the course would be offered together with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan under the Edu-Port Japan project. The project involves dissemination of Japanese-style education using public-private collaborative platforms.

He said that JNEC has received a 3D Printer-machine from Prof Junichi Kurata, a professor at Kansai University (KU) in Japan.

Prof Junichi Kurata said that the 3D machine would help produce spare parts like gear parts, as there are difficulties in availing the gear parts. The cost for the machine is more than USD 6,000 including shipping and other expenses.

Andu Drukpa said that KU and JNEC are engaged in a project where 10 students and one faculty member from JNEC will travel to Japan for a weeklong study tour next month under the Japan Science and Technology Agency funding.
