Archery: Samdrupjongkhar’s Orong gewog defeated Mongar gewog and Yallang gewog of Trashiyangtse to qualify for the finals of the Khesar Gyalpo Archery tournament played yesterday at Gyalpoizhing archery range.

Orong scored 26 points with 18 kareys while Mongar scored 12 with seven kareys and Yallang 11 with nine kareys in the quarterfinals yesterday. The tournament is played in the Yangphel archery style with each team consisting of seven archers and a substitute.

In the second semifinal today, two teams from Trashigang, Lumang and Merak will face the team from Gangzur, Lhuentse. The last semifinal will be played tomorrow amongst Martshala gewog of Samdrupjongkhar, Mongar’s Ngatshang gewog and Bumdeling of Trashiyangtse.

The Khesar Gyalpo Archery tournament is organized by the Office of the Gyaltshab, in Mongar to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, to preserve and promote Bhutan’s national sport of archery using traditional bow and arrow and to provide a platform for interaction among the people.

Archers from 12 gewogs were in Gyalpoizhing for the knockout rounds. They were the two best teams from each dzongkhag. 70 gewogs of six eastern dzongkhags took part in the tournament.
