A 26-year-old man, a lab assistant in one of the schools in Tsirang, was arrested last Friday for the alleged rape of a 17-year-old student in the same school.

A source said that the girl who was on medical leave from school reportedly sneaked out of the house at night to meet the suspect in the second week of this month. Upon inquiry, she confessed about the relationship to her uncle and the school administration reported the case to the police.

They first met on Facebook in March this year.

Police are investigating the case.

According to the Penal Code of Bhutan, the rape of a child above the age of twelve years is a second-degree felony with a prison term of nine to 15 years.
