The minister of Labour and Human Resources, Ugyen Dorji, is one of the 15 Young Global Leaders of 2020. Lyonpo has been recognized as one of the Forum of Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum – joining a community of people dedicated to changing the world for the better.

The Forum of Young Global Leaders is an area where leaders from different areas share their ideas and passion for the community’s success and development. The Forum of Young Global under a rigorous process identify world’s most promising and compelling leaders under the age of 40, according to the Forum’s website.

It also mentioned the chosen leaders have track records of galvanising innovation for positive change across civil society, arts, culture, government and business. They also described these leaders as examples of responsible leadership and commitment to addressing issues that need solving.

Lyonpo Ugyen Dorji said the news came as a surprise when he received a letter saying he was nominated and had been awarded the Young Global Leader for 2020 class.

“This means a lot to my country than for me as a minister since it’s a recognition of Bhutan including people of Thrimshing-Kangpara,” Lyonpo said. “It means Bhutanese like me under the leadership of His Majesty can share the global stage with people like Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin who is also awarded the same.”

Lyonpo said the award is an additional responsibility to guide Bhutanese youth and solve their employment issues.

“I’m not satisfied so far because I couldn’t do much although I tried my best. So, I would continue to try my best through this World Economic Forum where I can connect with best of young global leaders and global business leaders.”

Lyonpo also said that government alone cannot solve the youth unemployment problem, however, he looks forward to connecting private sectors through such global business leaders as support.

“This is the difference I hope to make through such global opportunity.”
