Assembly: As part of the 60th birth anniversary celebrations of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, 100 people will plant 50,000 tree saplings in an hour, below Kuenselphodrang on June 2 to beat the current world record of 40,885 trees planted in Assam, India.

“The initiative is to keep up with His Majesty’s vision towards conservation of the environment and to maintain the forest coverage of 60 percent,” Nyisho-Sephu’s representative, Kuenga said.

Parliament member Kuenga moved the motion to pay tribute to His Majesty The King and His Holiness the Je Khenpo coinciding with the yearlong celebrations of the 60th birth anniversaries of His Majesty and His Holiness.

Kuenga said that as His Majesty had always emphasised that youth are the future of the nation, 2015 has been dedicated as the National Reading Year. Besides, as part of the 60th birth anniversary celebrations, the government would also renovate damaged monuments and vandalised chortens.

Another important event is the establishment of Wangchuck Heritage Centre at Dungkar in Lhuentse as proposed by Lhuentse dzongkhag administration. Situated at the northernmost part of Kurtoe, the Dungkar Nagtshang is the ancestral home of the Royal family. The dzongkhag also proposes to inaugurate the palace of Desi Jigme Namgyel along with the heritage centre.

MP Kuenga said that with development, waste has become a major issue in every town and village across the country eventually affecting the health of the people. For this, Clean Bhutan, under the guidance of the Prime Minister was established on February 6 last year, with the objective to tackle waste at its source by Advocating Behavioral Change (ABC).

Ministry of Agriculture and Forest also initiated the ‘Golden Project on Floriculture’ to commemorate the 35th birth anniversary of His Majesty The King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck on February 21 and the 60th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King.

The project will produce a million flowers of selected species and varieties in mass quantity. During the national events, the ready-to-plant potted flowers will be showcased in the core areas of Thimphu city. This, Kuenga said would improve the aesthetics of the city and at the same time promote floriculture as an alternative means of livelihood to the people.

Long-life prayers will also be conducted for His Majesty the Fourth King and His Holiness the Je Khenpo.
