Bumthang police on August 19 detained a 23-year-old man for rape of a minor.

The case came to the limelight after a 15-year-old girl, who is the wife of the suspect, left home after an argument at dinnertime on August 18.

According to the victim’s statement to police, she was on her way to Thimphu where her mother lives when she asked for a lift from a woman. The victim told the woman that her husband and his brother tried to beat her.

The woman filed a complaint of domestic violence to Bumthang police on August 19.

A police official said that while investigating the case it was found that the girl was a minor. “In the eyes of the law, she is a minor.”

Medical reports confirmed that she is about two months pregnant.

It is learnt that police in Bumthang are investigating another rape case involving a minor, a 16-year-old class VIII student.

According to sources, a neighbour and a staff of the school are suspected to be the perpetrators.
