Verdict: Dagana district court last week sentenced a 29-year-old man from Larja gewog in Dagana to six months imprisonment for placing a sangdha (trap arrow) that killed a 40-year-old man.

The court also ordered Janga Bahadur Gurung to pay Nu 300,000 as compensation to the deceased’s family. According to the verdict, he was charged under section 160 of the Penal Code of Bhutan which states that a defendant shall be guilty of reckless endangerment, if the defendant’s reckless conduct including laying of sangdha places another person in danger of death or serious bodily injury.

“The offence is a petty misdemeanour and the six months imprisonment is bailable,” the verdict stated.

A 40-year-old man from the same gewog had accidentally stepped on a traditional sangdha and succumbed to the injury at the Larja basic health unit last September.

Janga Bahadur Gurung had laid the trap near his house to protect his maize field from wild animals. The incident happened at 6.30pm on September 29.

The deceased, Pema from Shengana, Punakha is survived by his wife and three children. According to the verdict, the arrow has hit his left leg and he had died of excessive bleeding.
