Almost a thousand participants including students, teachers, and villagers took part in a day-long Olympic Day celebration at the Chundu Armed Forces Public School (CAFPS) in Haa on May 28.

Olympic Day, organised by the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), is celebrated internationally to highlight the values associated with sports. Various sports and educational activities were conducted to mark the day with the students of CAFPS.

The Olympic Day celebration in different schools and dzongkhags every year helps introduce young people to sports. Many people say it’s good to conduct Olympic Day in other dzongkhags as residents and youth of Thimphu are getting more sporting opportunities compared to other dzongkhags.

BOC’s Secretary General Sonam Karma Tshering said: “It was the hope of the BOC that such events would open a new era for national sports and raise national participation to new levels, benefitting our youth, as well as sports enthusiasts around the country.”

A BOC official said the national sports federations and associations intend to engage as many as possible with the Olympic Day theme of “move, learn and discover.”

The official said the Olympic Day falls on June 23 but had to be moved forward to avoid inconveniences caused by the monsoon.

A press release from the BOC stated that the venue for the 2022 Olympic Day Celebration at the CAFPS also emphasises the partnership between the CAFPS and the Bhutan Boxing Federation as they established a structured athlete development pathway to enhance talent development.

Currently, there are 28 junior boxers enrolled in the talent development programme at the CAFPS.

Since the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the IOC has included a new theme- “together for a peaceful world.”
