Meat shops to be relocated to CFM

Thromde: There is a plan to ship meat shops along Norzin Lam and Chang Lam in Thimphu to a two-storey building near Centenary Farmers’ Market.

Thimphu Thromde is working on the design of the building. Construction is expected to begin before the end of this year. The ground floor of the building will be used as parking space. First floor will have about 20 meat shops.

Thimphu Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee said that the current situation where meat shops are everywhere in the city attract packs of stray dogs.

“How meat is handled is also barbaric,” he said.

The meat vans are kept open and people carry the whole of pork on their back to the meat shops, said the Thrompon. These are the main streets in the city and there will be people, including tourists going around the city and people will not want to see such things.

Thrompon said that the idea is to relocate all the meat shops in the city areas under one roof. The thromde will collect rental fees from the meat shops.

Thrompon said that the thromde’s reserve fund will be plough back into thromde projects.

There were about 57 meat shops in Thimphu.
