Voters of Punakha supported Namgay Dorji on his third attempt. The 41-year-old of Yoengu village in Talo Gewog is the National Council-elect from Punakha after securing 3,316 votes yesterday.
Namgay Dorji told Kuensel that he is speechless and cannot adequately convey his joy. He thanked the voters. He said, “Punakha’s residents have finally given me a chance.”
With 2,440 EVM votes and 876 in postal ballots, he beat the incumbent NC member, Lhaki Dolma. She received 1,652 EVM votes and 1,191 in postal ballots.
Chencho Wangdi from Chhubu Gewog secured 1,968 including 476 postal ballots, Dophu Dukpa received 1,627 votes, while Dorji Tenzin secured the least votes with 1,164 including 358 postal ballots.
Of the 3,655 postal ballots issued, Punakha returning officer received 3,400 of them, including those sent abroad. A total of 122 ballots from envelope A and seven ballots from envelope B were rejected.
He holds a master’s in Mass Communication and Media Management, a bachelor’s in Public Administration, and Diploma in ICT.
Barp, Goenshari, Guma, Kabisa, Lingmukha, Toewang Gewogs, and the Khuruthang Throm did not have NC candidates.
Punakha has 18,788 registered voters of which 9,852 are female.
