Namling – Latongla road risky, caution road officials

Road: With the area shrouded in fog due to incessant rain, travellers are cautioned to be alert when driving between Namling and Latongla in Mongar and to avoid driving at night.

Erosions triggred from heavy rains on August 3 have washed away almost half of the road. Around 5am yesterday, a Hilux toppled down the eroded area. The driver and a passenger however, managed to escape with minor injures.

According to the site engineer Wangdi, the foggy weather could have caused the vehicle to roll over the cliff. They are also suspecting sleeping driving because the driver had started for Thimphu from Mongar at 2am.

The men were returning from Trashiyangtse after the cordycep auction.

Following the incident, the site engineer and national work force men from the regional department of roads in Lingmithang visited the site with machinery.

Wangdi said that the half of the blacktopped road has been eroded and for heavy vehicles to ply through, the road has been widened from the upper side.

“Travellers are requested not to travel in dark as the area remains under fog all the time,” Wangdi said. “After dark, its quite risky for us to work as the area of these road is located at steep terrain.”

Namling has been a very dangerous point on the EastWest highway especially after that tragic accident of a passenger bus in 1998. It’s the responsibility of all individuals to remain alert while travelling through this place. Nature can not be commanded but should be negotiated with. So, God bless all travelers.
