The 14th National School Athletics Meet that began in Thimphu yesterday brought more than 400 students from 20 dzongkhags.

The student athletes will compete in 26 different track and field events.

The meet this year has more girls participating.

The participants were selected from the record submitted by the dzongkhags and the thromdes based on their performance at dzongkhag level sports meet.

Education secretary Karma Yeshey urged the student athletes to keep their talent and skills alive and work hard to explore better opportunities in the future.

The meet is held to recognise sports talents and to engage youth meaningfully during summer break. Besides cultural shows and screening of movies related to sports, the participants will also attend educational talk after the events.

This is the second time at the meet for Sonam Tshomo from Taktse Rigzhung Higher Secondary School in Trongsa. She said that the meet provides students with the opportunities show exhibit individual talents.

The meet is organised by Department of Youth and Sports’ games and sports division with technical support from Bhutan Amateur Athletics Federation (BAAF).
