Bhutan is one of the few countries in Asia never to have been colonised. This feat was achieved through a deliberate policy of self-imposed isolation. For centuries, it used its formidable mountains, dense forests, and fast-flowing rivers as natural fortifications, shutting its doors to the outside world.
