Motivated to contest in the parliamentary elections, Chencho Dorji, 37, decided to continue his studies in 2013. He has been a tour operator, a guide, a teacher, a businessman and a farmer.

With a Bachelors degree in Arts and Politics from Lovely Professional University in India this year, he has decided to contest as the National Council (NC) candidate from Shaba gewog in Paro.

Claiming that he had been inspired to represent people by his grandfather, who was a local leader in the 1980s. His uncle was also a local leader in the 1990s and 2011. He said he wanted to contest since 2008, but his qualification was a disadvantage.

He, however, said that people in Paro should judge him based on his capabilities and not his family background.

Chencho Dorji said that with his experience, he understands the issue of the people and would help him serve the people better. “I take this as an opportunity to serve the country and know the people better.”

He said that he would focus on employment generation and promote export-related organic farming if people elect him. “We have sufficient resources in the country and we just need proper grading, sorting, and packaging so that it can benefit the business both locally and internationally.”

So far there are five aspiring NC candidates from Paro.
